Bengali weddings, also known as Biye, are a rich tapestry of traditions, rituals, emotions, and vibrant celebrations. Deeply rooted in culture yet constantly evolving, a Bengali wedding is not just the union of two individuals—it is a celebration of two families coming together with music, colors, and lots of love.
Pre-Wedding Rituals
1. Aiburo Bhaat
This is a "last meal" ceremony where the bride and groom are treated to a grand feast by their families before entering married life. It's a celebration of the bachelor/bachelorette life with traditional Bengali dishes like shorshe ilish (hilsa in mustard curry) and mishti (sweets).
2. Ashirbaad (Blessings)
The elders bless the bride and groom separately in a ceremony with gifts like gold jewelry, sweets, and traditional attire.
3. Gaye Holud (Haldi Ceremony)
Held separately at the bride’s and groom’s houses, turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom for glowing skin. This ceremony is full of fun, laughter, and vibrant yellow decor.
Wedding Day Rituals
1. Bor Jatri
The groom arrives at the wedding venue accompanied by a procession of family and friends, often with much pomp, music, and excitement.
2. Shubho Drishti
One of the most magical moments— the bride, seated on a wooden seat called a piri and lifted by her brothers, circles the groom seven times while covering her face with betel leaves. After the seventh circle, she finally looks at the groom—the first glance (Shubho Drishti)—amid joyous cheers.
3. Mala Badal (Exchange of Garlands)
The bride and groom exchange garlands, symbolizing acceptance of each other.
4. Sampradan and Saptapadi
In the presence of the sacred fire, various vows are taken. The couple walks seven rounds (saptapadi) around the fire, promising lifelong companionship.
5. Sindoor Daan
The groom applies sindoor (vermilion) on the bride’s hair parting, marking her as married. The bride then covers her head with a new saree (often a red Benarasi) gifted by the groom’s family.
Post-Wedding Rituals
1. Bidaay (Farewell)
A highly emotional moment where the bride bids farewell to her family to start a new life.
2. Bou Bhaat
At the groom's house, the bride is formally introduced to her new family and serves a special meal.
Bengali Wedding Aesthetics
Sarees: Red and white Benarasi sarees dominate the bride’s attire, while grooms often wear dhoti and kurta or sherwani.
Jewelry: Traditional gold jewelry, like shakha-pola (white and red bangles) and mukut (crown), is worn.
Decor: Marigolds, mango leaves, alpana (rice flour patterns), and traditional lamps adorn the wedding venue.
Food: A Bengali wedding feast is legendary—offering an elaborate spread including fish, mutton curry, rice dishes, sweets like rosogolla, sandesh, and mishti doi (sweet curd).
A Bengali wedding is more than a ceremony; it’s a grand, emotional, vibrant festival that celebrates love, family, tradition, and new beginnings.
