Chakli (also known as Murukku in South India) is a popular crunchy snack made during festivals like Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, and other celebrations. With its spiral shape and crispy texture, chakli is a household favorite that combines tradition with irresistible taste.

*Introduction

Chakli is one of India’s most loved festive snacks. Known for its crispiness, unique spiral shape, and rich flavors, it is prepared with rice flour, gram flour, and a blend of aromatic spices. Though it is traditionally deep-fried, many also prepare baked or air-fried versions for a healthier twist.

* Ingredients:

2 cups rice flour

1 cup gram flour (besan)

2 tbsp butter (softened) or oil

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp sesame seeds

½ tsp ajwain (carom seeds)

1 tsp red chili powder

½ tsp turmeric powder

½ tsp asafoetida (hing)

Salt to taste

Water as needed (to make dough)

Oil (for deep frying)

* Method:

Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine rice flour, gram flour, sesame seeds, cumin seeds, ajwain, chili powder, turmeric, hing, and salt.

Add softened butter/oil and mix well until crumbly.

Gradually add water to form a smooth, soft dough.

Shape the Chakli

Grease a chakli/murukku press with oil and fill it with dough.

Press out spirals onto a butter paper or greased plate.

Deep Fry

Heat oil in a kadhai on medium flame.

Carefully slide chaklis into hot oil and fry until golden brown and crisp.

Drain on absorbent paper.

Serve & Store

Once cooled, store in an airtight container.

Chakli stays fresh for up to 2–3 weeks.

* Tips for Perfect Chakli:

Always fry on medium flame for even cooking.

Ensure dough is not too hard or too soft; it should be pliable.

Add a pinch of garam masala for extra flavor.

For a healthier version, bake chaklis at 180°C or use an air fryer.

* Conclusion

Crispy, golden chakli is more than just a festive snack—it’s a taste of tradition passed down through generations. Whether enjoyed with tea or served during family gatherings, this crunchy spiral will always win hearts.
