We often pay great attention to our clothes, hairstyles, and fitness, yet we tend to overlook what we wear on our feet. For many, design, color, and price are the primary factors when buying shoes or sandals. However, science suggests that footwear is not merely a fashion statement; it is directly linked to our gait, the pressure exerted on the feet, and the movement of the lower body. Wearing ill-fitting or poorly designed footwear for extended periods can lead to foot pain and other complications.
If a shoe is too small or tight, the toes lack adequate space, resulting in constant pressure. Prolonged exposure to this condition can cause issues such as foot pain, blisters, corns, and the thickening of the skin.
Many people focus solely on whether their foot fits into the shoe when making a purchase, but the width of the shoe is equally important. If the shoe is too narrow at the front, the toes may get squashed together, causing discomfort while walking and foot pain. Therefore, shoes that allow the toes some room to spread naturally are considered a better choice.
Consistently wearing high heels affects more than just the feet. Research has linked high heels to alterations in foot structure, musculoskeletal pain, and an increased risk of injury. A meta-analysis found that wearing high heels increases the load and moments acting on the knee joint during walking. However, this does not mean that wearing heels occasionally is harmful for everyone; rather, it is the daily, prolonged use of high heels that can lead to foot-related problems.
Our feet bear the body's weight against the ground. Changes in shoe shape and design can slightly alter our walking pattern. An improper fit can make it difficult to maintain a natural foot position, which is why wearing unsuitable footwear for long periods can result in pain or discomfort. According to science, a shoe should allow the foot to rest comfortably. There should be no excessive pressure on the toes, the heel should not repeatedly slip out of the shoe, and the foot should not experience any discomfort while walking. If you begin to feel pain, a burning sensation, or pressure in your foot shortly after putting on the shoes, you should not ignore it.
