Ingredients:
For Mochi (makes ~8 small balls):
1 cup glutinous rice flour (mochiko)
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
Cornstarch or potato starch (for dusting)
Food coloring (optional, for pastel colors)
For Decoration:
Edible black sesame seeds or melted dark chocolate (for eyes/smile)
Edible gold leaf (optional, luxury touch)
Toothpick or food-safe marker (for drawing faces)
For Serving:
Small gold-rimmed bowls or ramekins
Sweetened condensed milk or coconut milk (optional drizzle)
Fruit slices, red beans, or matcha jelly (optional garnish)
Instructions:
1. Make the Mochi Dough:
Mix mochiko, sugar, and water in a microwave-safe bowl until smooth.
Cover with plastic wrap (leave a small gap for steam).
Microwave for 2 minutes, stir well, then microwave again for 1–2 minutes until the dough turns translucent and sticky.
2. Cool and Shape the Mochi Balls:
Dust a clean surface with starch.
Scoop small portions of the hot mochi (careful—it’s sticky!) and shape into round balls using dusted hands.
Let them cool completely.
3. Add Cute Smiles:
Use black sesame seeds or a toothpick dipped in melted chocolate to make eyes and a smile.
Optionally, add a blush effect with a tiny dab of beet juice or pink food coloring.
4. Serve:
Place each mochi in a gold-rimmed bowl.
Drizzle a bit of sweetened coconut milk or condensed milk.
Garnish with fruit, gold leaf, or matcha jelly.
Serve chilled or at room temperature.
