As social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok continue to grow in recent years, the act of vlogging (video blogs, usually shot selfie style and on the go) has gone from hobbies to potential careers. But despite the spontaneous vibes of vlogs, producing one takes a bit of work and preparation. The majority of digital cameras do not have screens that face the same direction as the lens, and even the most compact mirrorless shooters are still too heavy to hold one-handed, selfie style, for extended periods of time.
Smaller action cameras are easier to carry, but they usually suffer from inferior image and audio quality. And unless one attaches the camera to a gimbal—which adds more weight—chances are the footage will be a bit jittery.
The IdolCam is hoping to fix that. Created by Chinese-American Jason Lam and manufactured in Shenzhen, the new gadget is essentially a wide-angle camera built on top of a gimbal with a flip out screen and mic, all in a relatively petite 275g package.
After raising $145,000 in a successfully Kickstarter campaign last fall, the IdolCam is ready to go on sale globally. I had the chance to test out the camera recently, and though I’m not a vlog expert, I came away impressed by the overall package.
