Tucked away along the scenic Konkan coastline of Maharashtra lies the quaint village of Velas, a place where nature, conservation, and tradition blend seamlessly. Once just another sleepy coastal hamlet, Velas has now found a unique place on the eco-tourism map of India—thanks to its Turtle Festival, a heartwarming celebration of life, patience, and community-driven conservation.

What Makes Velas Special?

Every year between February and April, Velas plays host to a miraculous natural event—the hatching of the Olive Ridley sea turtles. These endangered marine creatures return to the beach of their birth to lay eggs in the sand, continuing a cycle that’s both ancient and fragile.

Locals and volunteers from NGOs, especially the Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra, work tirelessly to protect these nests from predators and human interference. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny baby turtles are carefully guided toward the sea, with visitors witnessing this emotional moment during sunrise or sunset.

Beyond the Turtles

While the turtles are the stars of the show, Velas offers much more to experience:

Unspoiled Beaches: Calm, clean, and mostly crowd-free, ideal for long walks and beach picnics.

Local Homestays: Stay with local families, eat fresh Konkani meals, and enjoy authentic hospitality.

Bankot Fort: A short trek away, this hilltop fort offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding greenery.

Eco-Conscious Culture: Plastic-free zones, organic food, and sustainable tourism practices are part of everyday life here.

Why Velas Matters

The Velas Turtle Festival is more than just a spectacle—it's a powerful story of grassroots conservation. Instead of choosing tourism that harms the ecosystem, Velas has embraced a model where nature is respected, and locals are empowered.

By opening their homes to visitors, Velas residents earn income without compromising their environment. Tourists, in turn, take back a deeper understanding of biodiversity, environmental responsibility, and the beauty of slow travel.
