According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Textiles on Sunday, the exhibition 'Worlds Within Cloth: New Orders of Woven Making' will be inaugurated on Wednesday at the Virasat Hall of the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy here.
To be inaugurated by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), the exhibition will be open to the public from August 6 to 19, between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, as part of the celebrations for the 12th National Handloom Day on August 7. The statement invites the public to view this unique presentation of contemporary textile-making processes and their evolving relationship with India's living handloom traditions.
Curated by Shreyansi Singh, the exhibition brings together contemporary textile artists, designers, and craft groups whose work expands the understanding of handloom beyond its physical form. Through research-based works, artist-artisan collaborations, and immersive installations, the exhibition will explore the social, historical, and cultural contexts of textile making, while highlighting experimentation, interdisciplinary approaches, and new ways of engaging with craft traditions.
Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, which will also be attended by senior officials from the Handloom Department.
Showcasing the work of artists and groups such as Aadyam Handwoven, Abraham & Thakore, Aastha Butail, Boito, Chanakya School, Coonoor & Co., Jagruti Phukan, Jayita Chatterjee, Kardo, Mori, Neeraj Patel, Porgai Artisans Association, Shraddha Kochhar, Srijan, Studio Medium, Ujjwal Dey, and 23 N 69 E, the exhibition will highlight diverse contemporary processes that engage with India's handloom heritage through innovation, collaboration, and critical inquiry. According to the statement, many of the participating artists are supported by prominent galleries and cultural institutions, reflecting the growing dialogue between contemporary art and craft. This exhibition seeks to foster a better understanding of contemporary textile-making processes by presenting textiles as a medium for knowledge, cultural memory, and creative expression. By bringing together artists, designers, artisans, and craft groups, it encourages meaningful dialogue about the evolving role of textiles in relation to identity, sustainability, community, and material culture. The statement notes that the exhibition will celebrate the vibrant fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic practice.
