If you experience difficulty straightening your back or feel a pulling sensation when bending over immediately after getting out of bed, do not dismiss it as mere fatigue. Back stiffness is a common issue that can arise from sleeping in an awkward position, sitting in one place for extended periods, or overexertion. However, if the problem recurs frequently or persists for a long time, it could indicate an underlying spinal issue rather than just a muscular problem.
Prolonged sitting is one of the most common causes of back stiffness. Nowadays, sitting in an office chair for hours on end or spending long periods using a mobile phone at home can increase strain on the back muscles. When the body remains in a single position for a long time, the muscles around the lower back and hips cannot function optimally, which can lead to stiffness and a pulling sensation when standing up.
Poor posture can also aggravate this issue. Constantly leaning forward while seated, failing to support the lower back, or looking down at a mobile phone for extended periods affects the body's natural alignment. Similarly, standing for long durations or suddenly lifting heavy objects can strain the back muscles, potentially causing pain alongside stiffness.
Your sleeping position can also contribute to back stiffness. If the body remains in a position that places excessive pressure on the lower back and surrounding muscles throughout the night, you may feel stiff upon waking. A lack of physical movement is another common cause; when muscles are not used regularly, the body's flexibility and strength are compromised. Therefore, those who sit for most of the day should incorporate light activity and regular exercise into their daily routine.
Applying gentle heat can provide some relief from back stiffness. Applying heat helps relax the muscles. Additionally, rather than remaining in bed for extended periods, it is better to engage in light movement suited to your physical capacity. Gentle stretching exercises can also be beneficial, but you should not force any activity that aggravates the pain.
To prevent issues, the most important step is to avoid sitting continuously for long periods. Get up and walk a few steps occasionally, and ensure your lower back is supported while sitting. Daily light exercise, walking, and muscle-strengthening exercises tailored to your physical ability help keep the back strong.
Back stiffness is not always a minor issue. If the pain is severe, recurrent, or persists for several weeks, it is essential to consult a doctor.
