Nowadays, people use a variety of beauty products to achieve glowing, healthy skin; however, an external glow is not the only indicator of good skin. A balanced skin pH is a sign of health. When the skin's pH level is disrupted, issues such as dryness, irritation, acne, allergies, and premature aging can arise.

Essentially, pH measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral; levels below 7 are acidic, while those above 7 are alkaline.

According to scientists, human skin is naturally slightly acidic. Ideally, the pH level should fall between 4.5 and 5.5. This acidity helps maintain a thin protective layer known as the "skin barrier," which shields the skin from bacteria, dust, pollution, and harmful elements.

Doctors state that maintaining a balanced skin pH helps retain moisture and keeps the skin soft; conversely, when this balance is disrupted, problems begin to escalate. Excessive use of soap, harsh chemical-based face washes, or frequent face washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, potentially making it dry and sensitive. On the other hand, some individuals may experience increased oil production, which can aggravate acne and pimples.

Medical research indicates that factors such as age, weather, diet, and stress also influence skin pH. Sweat and sun exposure affect the skin during summer, while winter can lead to increased dryness. Additionally, lack of sleep and a poor diet can weaken the skin's protective barrier. Often, people unknowingly use products with a pH level unsuitable for their skin, which can trigger issues like irritation, redness, and itching. According to dermatologists, there are certain signs that indicate the skin's balance is being disrupted. If your skin feels excessively tight after washing your face, itches frequently, suddenly becomes very oily or extremely dry, or if acne keeps appearing, it could be a sign of an upset pH balance. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Sun exposure can also affect the skin's pH levels; therefore, experts recommend applying sunscreen daily. Additionally, drinking enough water, eating a nutritious diet, and getting adequate sleep are considered essential for healthy skin.
