Nowadays, everyone wants their hair to look beautiful and stylish. Whether for a special occasion or simply to switch up their everyday look, people experiment with various hairstyles. The use of straighteners to straighten hair, curling irons to create curls, hair dryers for quick drying, and extensions to add volume has become commonplace. While these tools can make hair look attractive in minutes, improper use can gradually compromise hair strength.
According to dermatologists, the hair's outer layer—known as the cuticle—serves to protect the hair. Frequent exposure to intense heat, tension, or heavy accessories can weaken this protective layer, leading to dry, lifeless, and brittle hair that is prone to breakage.
Hair straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers are among the most frequently used styling tools. Although they provide an immediate aesthetic boost, excessive heat depletes the hair's internal moisture. The natural proteins in the hair begin to break down, which can reduce shine and increase the occurrence of split ends. Additionally, directing hot air from a blow dryer straight onto the scalp can cause dryness of the scalp skin.
Experts advise that if heat styling tools must be used, it is best to apply a heat protection product beforehand. It is also important to avoid using excessively high temperatures. Rather than using these tools daily, it is essential to give your hair a break and allow it to rest naturally from time to time.
The habit of tying hair tightly can also cause gradual damage. Many people wear tight ponytails, tight braids, or hairstyles that pull the hair taut for extended periods. This places constant pressure on the hair roots. In medical terms, this condition is known as traction alopecia, where hair roots weaken and hair falls out due to repeated pulling or tension. Hair near the forehead and along the hairline is particularly susceptible to this.
It is advisable to use soft-fabric hair bands or opt for loose hairstyles when tying your hair. Switching between different styles instead of tying your hair the same way every day helps reduce the strain on your hair.
Hair clips and pins can also affect hair health. Heavy metal clips or overly tight pins can pull at the hair and put pressure on the scalp. Prolonged use can lead to scalp pain, irritation, and hair breakage. Therefore, using lightweight and comfortable clips is a better option.
The type of comb used also plays a crucial role in hair health. Combs with very stiff teeth or poor-quality brushes can cause increased hair breakage. Using a wide-toothed comb is recommended for detangling hair. Additionally, combs and brushes should be cleaned regularly to prevent accumulated dirt and debris from damaging the hair and scalp.
Nowadays, the use of hair extensions to achieve thicker, longer-looking hair has become increasingly popular. However, wearing heavy extensions for extended periods places extra weight on the hair roots. Constant tension can weaken the hair and increase the risk of hair loss. Therefore, opt for lightweight extensions and avoid keeping them in for weeks at a time.
