While curly hair looks beautiful, managing it can be quite a challenge. Issues like tangling and becoming dry and lifeless due to a lack of moisture are daily struggles for almost everyone with curly hair. Frequent combing or overwashing can exacerbate these problems. The good news is that you don't need expensive products; simply changing a few habits can make a difference.

First, it is important to understand that everyone's hair is different. Therefore, a routine that works for one person may not necessarily work for another.

Let’s start with washing your hair. It is not necessary to wash curly hair every day. The frequency of washing depends on factors like oiliness, sweat, dust, and dandruff on the scalp. If your scalp isn't overly oily, frequent shampooing isn't required. Excessive washing can strip away natural oils, leaving the hair feeling dry. It is best to shampoo based on the specific needs of your hair and scalp.

Keep another point in mind when applying shampoo: focus primarily on cleansing the scalp. There is no need to vigorously rub the entire length of the hair; the lather from the shampoo will reach down and clean the strands. If your hair feels very dry or tangled after washing, using a mild shampoo and a good conditioner can help.

Conditioner is incredibly useful for curly hair. It helps smooth the hair's surface, reducing tangles and making combing easier. Research shows that conditioner minimizes friction between hair strands, thereby reducing damage during detangling. Therefore, applying conditioner to the lengths and ends of your hair after shampooing can be beneficial.

The way you dry your hair also matters significantly. Instead of vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel after washing, gently blot away the moisture. You should also avoid pulling or tugging at wet hair while combing; repeated pulling and friction increase the risk of breakage, especially for curly hair.

You can also use a hair serum or leave-in conditioner to keep your hair soft. Applying a small amount to slightly damp hair—particularly after washing—smooths the hair surface and reduces tangles. However, using too much product can make the hair look greasy or weighed down, so a small quantity is sufficient.
