Pregnancy and the postpartum period are significant phases in a woman's life. While this time brings the joy of motherhood, many women may also face mental health issues—such as stress, anxiety, and depression—due to hormonal changes, fatigue, sleep deprivation, and the responsibilities of caring for a newborn. A new study suggests that regular physical activity and light exercise during this period can help improve women's mental health.

The study, titled 'Physical Activity and Perinatal Depression and Anxiety: A Global Umbrella Review,' found that women who remained physically active during pregnancy and the postpartum period exhibited fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety. According to the researchers, regular physical activity can be a simple and effective way to reduce mental stress.

This study is based on a review of numerous previous studies published worldwide. Researchers analyzed studies published between 2014 and April 2026, gathering data from various international health and medical databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO. After reviewing a total of 4,109 studies, 20 key studies were selected for analysis; these examined the impact of physical activity on depression and anxiety during or after pregnancy and childbirth.

The study found that staying physically active on a regular basis can reduce symptoms of depression in women. According to the researchers, available evidence indicates that light exercise during pregnancy and the postpartum period can help improve mental health and maintain a positive mood.

Yoga was also identified as beneficial in the study. Researchers noted that yoga can help reduce stress and maintain mental peace.

The researchers also assessed the impact of physical activity on anxiety symptoms. The study indicated that regular physical activity could also help alleviate anxiety. However, further research is needed to reach a definitive conclusion in this regard.

Experts state that it is essential to pay special attention to women's mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Often, women overlook their mental health concerns and focus solely on physical changes. In such cases, taking a short daily walk, practicing yoga, or engaging in light physical activity suited to one's capacity can be beneficial for both mental and physical health.
