Hair loss is a rapidly growing problem these days, and it is not limited to age or the changing seasons. Seemingly minor factors—such as using the wrong shampoo, frequently switching products, or applying products without understanding your hair type—can weaken your hair.
While most people attribute hair loss to stress or diet, scientists emphasize that scalp care and choosing the right shampoo are equally important. An unsuitable shampoo can damage hair roots, causing the hair to gradually become thin and weak.
Experts note that shampoo also plays a role in maintaining the scalp's natural balance. Our scalp produces a natural oil called 'sebum,' which provides moisture and protection to the hair. Frequent use of harsh, chemical-laden shampoos or constantly switching between different products can strip away this natural oil. This can lead to either an excessively dry scalp or overproduction of oil; in either case, the risk of hair loss increases.
Scientific research indicates that frequently changing shampoos disrupts the scalp's microbiome. The scalp hosts beneficial bacteria that keep it healthy. Constantly switching shampoos upsets this balance, potentially leading to issues like itching, dandruff, and hair loss. Therefore, it is considered safer to select one type of shampoo and use it consistently.
Choosing the right shampoo becomes even more critical if your hair lacks moisture. Moisturizing shampoos contain ingredients that protect the hair's outer layer and prevent it from drying out. Retaining moisture strengthens the hair roots and reduces the likelihood of breakage. Thus, one should opt for a shampoo that nourishes the hair while keeping it soft and hydrated.
The problem of oily hair has also become quite common these days. In such situations, people often start washing their hair frequently, which only exacerbates the problem. Research indicates that frequent washing or the use of chemical-laden shampoos causes the scalp to produce even more oil. Consequently, the hair gets dirty faster and becomes weaker. Individuals with this issue should opt for shampoos that gently remove excess oil from the scalp while maintaining its natural balance.
Dry hair requires a different approach to care. A lack of moisture in the scalp leads to dry and brittle hair. Sulfate-based shampoos can be harmful in this case, as they cleanse too aggressively and strip away essential oils. Experts suggest that shampoos containing mild, nourishing ingredients—which cleanse the hair without causing damage—are better suited for dry hair.
