Ragi Halwa is a wholesome Indian dessert made from finger millet (ragi), a nutrient-rich grain known for its high calcium, iron, and fiber content. This healthy sweet dish combines the earthy flavor of ragi with the richness of ghee, milk, and jaggery or sugar, creating a soft, smooth, and comforting dessert. It is an excellent choice for breakfast, festive occasions, or as a nutritious evening snack for both children and adults.

Ingredients

1 cup ragi flour (finger millet flour)

2 cups milk

1 cup water

¾ cup jaggery (or sugar)

3 tablespoons ghee

½ teaspoon cardamom powder

8–10 cashews

8–10 almonds, chopped

1 tablespoon raisins

A few saffron strands (optional)

How to Make Ragi Halwa

Step 1: Roast the Ragi Flour

Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the ragi flour and roast it on low heat for 6–8 minutes until it turns aromatic. Stir continuously to prevent burning

Step 2: Prepare the Liquid

In another bowl, mix the milk and water. Slowly pour this mixture into the roasted flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

Step 3: Cook the Mixture

Cook the mixture on medium heat until it thickens. Add jaggery (or sugar) and stir well until it dissolves completely.

Step 4: Add Flavor

Mix in the remaining ghee, cardamom powder, and saffron strands if using. Continue stirring until the halwa leaves the sides of the pan.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

Roast cashews, almonds, and raisins in a little ghee and add them to the halwa. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.

Tips for Perfect Ragi Halwa

Roast the ragi flour thoroughly to remove its raw taste.

Stir continuously while adding the liquid to prevent lumps.

Use jaggery instead of sugar for a healthier and richer flavor.

Add more ghee for a softer, richer halwa if desired.

Garnish with your favorite dry fruits for extra crunch and nutrition.

Health Benefits of Ragi Halwa

Ragi is naturally gluten-free and packed with calcium, iron, fiber, and essential amino acids. It supports bone health, improves digestion, helps maintain steady blood sugar levels, and keeps you feeling full for longer. This makes Ragi Halwa a healthier alternative to many traditional desserts when enjoyed in moderation.

Conclusion

Ragi Halwa is a perfect blend of taste and nutrition. With its rich flavor, soft texture, and numerous health benefits, this traditional dessert is easy to prepare and suitable for all age groups. Whether you're looking for a healthy festive sweet or a comforting homemade dessert, Ragi Halwa is a wonderful recipe to add to your kitchen.
