Made with potatoes, cumin seeds, green chillies, and fresh coriander, this recipe is quick, flavorful, and requires only a few ingredients.

Whether you are observing a fast or simply looking for a comforting vegetarian dish, Shrawan Special Aloo Jeera is an excellent choice. Its earthy cumin flavor and mildly spicy taste make it a family favorite.

Ingredients

4 medium-sized potatoes

1½ tablespoons cumin seeds (jeera)

1–2 green chillies, finely chopped

1 teaspoon grated ginger

½ teaspoon turmeric powder, optional

½ teaspoon red chilli powder, optional

½ teaspoon cumin powder

Rock salt (sendha namak), as required for fasting

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons oil or ghee

2 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped

How to Make Shrawan Special Aloo Jeera

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and boil the potatoes until they are cooked but still firm. Allow them to cool, peel them, and cut them into medium-sized cubes.

Step 2: Temper the Spices

Heat oil or ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add chopped green chillies and grated ginger. Sauté for a few seconds.

Step 3: Add the Potatoes

Add the cubed potatoes to the pan and gently mix them with the cumin tempering. Cook for 3–4 minutes.

Step 4: Season the Dish

Add rock salt, cumin powder, and turmeric or red chilli powder if these fit your fasting preferences. Mix gently so that the potatoes remain intact.

Step 5: Cook Until Golden

Cook the potatoes over medium heat for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow some pieces to become lightly golden and crisp.

Step 6: Finish and Serve

Turn off the heat and add lemon juice and freshly chopped coriander. Give everything a gentle mix.

Use potatoes that are cooked but not overly soft.

Let the cumin seeds crackle properly to release their aroma.

Cook the potatoes without stirring too frequently to achieve a lightly crispy texture.

Use ghee for a richer and more aromatic taste.

Add lemon juice only after switching off the flame.

If preparing it for fasting, use sendha namak and only ingredients permitted according to your fasting tradition.
