In today's fast-paced lifestyle, sitting for hours while working has made body stiffness, back pain, and leg tension common issues. *Supta Padangusthasana* offers a solution by helping to stretch leg muscles, strengthen the hamstrings, and improve body balance.

The term '*Supta Padangusthasana*' is a combination of Sanskrit words: '*Supta*' means 'reclining' or 'lying down', '*Pada*' means 'foot', '*Angustha*' means 'big toe', and '*Asana*' means 'pose'. As a pose that involves connecting the hand to the big toe while lying down, it is considered a modern yoga posture; consequently, there are no detailed references to its practice in ancient Hatha Yoga texts.

While *Supta Padangusthasana* may appear simple, it offers profound benefits. According to the Ministry of AYUSH (Government of India), it is a significant yoga pose, and its regular practice is encouraged to enhance physical flexibility, spinal health, and blood circulation.

Performing this pose stretches the muscles of the lower back and hips, thereby relieving pressure and alleviating pain. It provides a deep stretch to the hamstrings, calves, and lower back. Additionally, lifting the legs during the pose improves blood circulation in the lower limbs, helping to reduce swelling and stiffness.

Elevating the legs relieves pressure on the leg veins—offering relief from varicose veins—while the compression of abdominal organs helps strengthen the digestive system. This asana relieves tension in the muscles of the spine and lower back, thereby reducing pain.

Do not practice this asana if you have a severe injury or pain in the hamstrings, pelvic muscles, knees, shoulders, or hip joints. You should also avoid this pose if you are suffering from severe sciatica pain or have recently undergone back or abdominal surgery.
