The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has recommended incorporating *Sarvangasana*—also known as the Shoulder Stand—into one's daily routine to ensure a healthy life during old age.
On the occasion of International Yoga Day 2026, the theme "Yoga for Healthy Aging" is being adopted. The Ministry aims to convey that yoga is not merely for the youth, but is beneficial for people of all ages—particularly the elderly. By adopting practices such as *Sarvangasana*, individuals can maintain their health and vitality even as they advance in years.
This *asana* (posture) proves effective in alleviating digestive issues and maintaining the balance of the body's endocrine system. *Sarvangasana* is regarded as one of the most significant postures in yoga. In this pose, the body is inverted and supported by the shoulders. This *asana* stimulates the thyroid gland, thereby helping to maintain hormonal balance. Furthermore, it aids in relieving abdominal ailments such as constipation, indigestion, and gas.
Moreover, it serves as an excellent method for improving blood circulation and enhancing oxygen supply to the brain. Yoga experts emphasize that healthy aging is not limited solely to physical activity; rather, it is intrinsically linked to maintaining the body's internal equilibrium. By adopting small, positive habits today, we can ensure a healthy and active old age in the years to come. Regular yoga practice offers protection against the weakness, fatigue, and various chronic ailments often associated with the aging process.
However, it is crucial to learn this *asana* correctly when starting out. Practicing under the supervision of experts significantly minimizes the risk of injury. It is advisable to incorporate this posture into your daily routine with the guidance of a yoga expert—particularly if you suffer from neck or back issues, or high blood pressure.
