When you stop to think about it, microphones are perhaps one of the most iconic and ubiquitous pieces of technology that we see on a daily basis and yet we probably don’t take much notice of them. Just think of all the historic speeches or performances that were ever captured on film or in photographs, whether it’s the famous wartime image of Winston Churchill in front of an old BBC ribbon microphone, or Jim Morrison performing with The Doors on TV. It's almost guaranteed that you’ll have seen a microphone in the photo or the footage. In fact, microphones are such a valuable piece of media real estate that broadcasters even brand the foam windshields on their mics.
The design of the microphone is, in some ways, as important as its function and there are even a group of enthusiasts who harbor a deep interest in mics who can name the manufacturer and model number of classic designs in much the same way that a trainspotter can identify an old steam locomotive.
One of the most iconic microphone brands is AKG, a brand that was founded in Vienna, Austria, way back in 1947. AKG is rightly known for having created some of the best mics and headphones in the music business and broadcasting industries. The company is now owned by Harman Inc, which is, in turn, owned by Samsung. However, AKG is very much its own brand and continues creating ground-breaking products that set the pace and style for others to follow in the professional audio market.
The latest consumer mic to come out from the AKG stable is the all-new Lyra, AKG’s first USB mic from the company’s Content Creator Series. The Lyra is aimed at a new generation of creatives who produce podcasts, vlogs, YouTube videos and, perhaps most of important of all, music. The Lyra has the most exquisite and striking features that take some of their design cues from AKG’s classic C414 condenser mic and it includes an integrated stand with cable management built in. The stand can be detached enabling the Lyra to be used on a traditional mic stand or boom arm.
