Yoga is a surefire remedy for maintaining the health of both the body and the mind. By stretching the body, it helps alleviate various physical ailments. One such posture is *Purvottanasana* (Upward Plank Pose), which strengthens the arms, shoulders, lower back, and legs while also boosting self-confidence.

The name *Purvottanasana* is derived from two words: *Purva* and *Uttana*. *Purva* refers to the 'eastern direction' or the 'front side of the body,' while *Uttana* means 'stretched.' Practicing this asana improves overall health and helps keep stress at bay.

The Ministry of AYUSH has recognized this as a significant yoga posture. According to the Ministry, it strengthens the muscles of the arms, wrists, back, thighs, and shoulders by balancing the body's entire weight on the hands and feet. This asana promotes energy flow, enhances spinal flexibility, and tones the abdominal muscles.

Practicing *Purvottanasana* exerts pressure on the abdomen, thereby strengthening abdominal muscles and helping to reduce fat accumulated around the midsection. Additionally, it increases body flexibility and stimulates the flow of energy.

Daily practice provides relief from back pain and headaches, strengthens back muscles, and alleviates lower back discomfort. Improved blood circulation also helps reduce the frequency of headaches.

According to Ayurveda, this asana enhances bodily flexibility, improves muscle suppleness, boosts energy levels, and sharpens mental acuity.

Since the body's weight rests on the hands and wrists during this pose, individuals with wrist injuries should avoid it. Furthermore, those suffering from neck injuries should either completely abstain from this asana or use the support of a chair while practicing it.
