Yoga is an effective means of establishing balance between the body, mind, and soul. Among the various poses, *Marichyasana* helps increase body flexibility, massages abdominal organs, and improves respiratory capacity by opening the rib cage.
The name *Marichyasana* is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Marichi' (referring to the sage Marichi, a mind-born son of Lord Brahma and the progenitor of the Solar Dynasty) and 'Asana' (meaning posture or pose).
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has issued guidelines regarding this asana. According to them, *Marichyasana* is a seated twisting pose that helps make the spine flexible, improves digestion, and aids in managing diabetes.
Regular practice keeps various body organs healthy. This pose helps activate the adrenal glands and the pancreas, thereby improving hormone secretion. It also enhances the functioning of the reproductive system; it increases blood circulation in the pelvic region and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles. Regular practice reduces stress and instills a sense of energy and vitality in the body.
Performing this asana is quite simple. To practice it, first sit on a yoga mat in *Dandasana* (Staff Pose). Next, bend your right knee and place your left arm against the outside of your right thigh. Exhale while twisting to the right and looking backward. If possible, clasp your hands behind your back. Take 5–10 deep breaths and repeat on the other side. Initially, perform the pose slowly and under the supervision of a yoga instructor. Focus entirely on your breathing and do not rush.
However, individuals suffering from severe back pain or injuries, those who have recently undergone abdominal surgery, pregnant women, and people with serious medical conditions should avoid practicing this pose or do so only under medical advice. Practicing this offers various benefits to the body, but maintaining a balanced diet alongside yoga is equally important. Proper nutrition keeps digestion healthy, calms the mind, and aids in physical and mental purification.
