With International Yoga Day just around the corner, the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, is actively sharing information about various yoga asanas to raise awareness. As part of this initiative, the Ministry has highlighted 'Saral Dhanurasana' (Simple Bow Pose) as an effective asana that helps keep the body active while enhancing spinal flexibility.
Regular practice can lead to improved physical and mental well-being. Yoga experts note that the sedentary nature of modern lifestyles—often involving long hours of sitting—leads to various back and spine-related issues. Saral Dhanurasana works by stretching the posterior part of the body and strengthening the muscles. It is also considered beneficial for boosting energy levels and reducing mental stress.
To perform this asana, begin by lying flat on your stomach. Next, rest your forehead on the ground, bend both knees, and grasp your ankles with your hands. Then, while inhaling deeply, slowly lift your head, chest, and knees. As you pull your legs upwards with the help of your hands, your body forms a bow-like shape. Hold this position for a few moments, then slowly exhale while returning to the starting position and allowing your body to relax.
Experts advise against rushing while practicing this asana; it is more beneficial to practice gradually, in accordance with your body's capacity. Individuals suffering from severe back pain, spinal issues, or other health concerns should consult a yoga instructor before attempting this pose.
