The risk of falling increases significantly with age. A minor lapse in attention or poor balance can lead to serious injuries for the elderly. In such situations, yoga poses (asanas) prove to be a safe and effective remedy.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, regular yoga practice can substantially reduce the risk of falls among the elderly. The World Health Organization also warns that falls are a leading cause of injury and disability in older adults. Issues such as impaired balance, muscle weakness, and joint stiffness become common in people over the age of 60. These factors make daily activities difficult and increase the likelihood of falling.

Research indicates that yoga offers an excellent solution to these problems. Regular yoga practice leads to significant improvements in body balance, coordination, and physical mobility. A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies involving people over 60 yielded impressive results: elderly individuals who practiced yoga demonstrated better balance and mobility, which clearly reduced their risk of falling.

Simple yoga poses—such as Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), and Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)—strengthen the muscles of the legs, waist, and back. These poses enhance balance and help stabilize the body. Additionally, yoga calms the mind and alleviates fear and anxiety, thereby boosting self-confidence.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, yoga not only improves physical fitness but also helps the elderly lead a healthy and active life. Experts suggest that practicing yoga for just 20–30 minutes daily can be beneficial. It is advisable to start under the guidance of a yoga instructor, especially for those with pre-existing medical conditions.
