In today's fast-paced life, yoga serves as an excellent means to find relief from rising stress, back pain, and respiratory issues. 'Makarasana' holds a special place in this ancient Indian discipline. It is considered highly beneficial for alleviating fatigue and providing complete relaxation to the body.

In Sanskrit, the word 'Makar' means 'crocodile.' Since the body's posture in this asana resembles that of a crocodile resting in water, it is known as 'Makarasana.' This pose relieves stress, improves digestion, and offers relief from conditions such as asthma, cervical issues, and sciatica pain.

Within the Hatha Yoga tradition, Makarasana is regarded as a highly effective pose; while most yoga asanas build strength, flexibility, and balance, Makarasana works to induce a state of deep relaxation for both the body and the mind.

Practicing this asana regularly is extremely beneficial for the spine. It helps maintain the structural balance of the spine and enhances its flexibility. It is particularly advantageous for individuals suffering from issues like back pain and slipped discs.

Furthermore, Makarasana helps reduce mental stress and anxiety. Practicing this pose calms the mind and improves concentration.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, Makarasana helps strengthen the digestive system. During the practice, the body lies prone (on the stomach) on the ground, exerting gentle pressure on the abdomen. This pressure stimulates the digestive organs. Taking deep, slow breaths while performing the pose increases oxygen flow in the body, thereby improving digestion and providing relief from problems such as gas, constipation, and indigestion.
